Lake County Invite
Thursday, May 12 2016 - Lake County Track & FieldAt the 2016 Lake County Invite Highland Park High School finished in 9th place just in front of 10th place Deerfield High School. The Giants were just 4 points out of 7th place.
The team had several medalists and many additional strong performances.
Senior Tucker Thompson continued his season of improvement and strong performances with a big personal best in the Shot Put. He threw 50’4.5” to take 2nd place! This was his first time over 50’.
It is very tough to earn a medal at the Lake County Invite and to do so as a sophomore is even more impressive. Sophomore Zach Auerbach was able to do that with a 6th place finish in the Discus. He threw an impressive 135’5”.
In the 110 Meter High Hurdles, junior Zev Motew finished in 5th place with a time of 15.60.
Senior Ryan Kriozere injured his knee during the indoor season and has been working hard to return from the injury. It was exciting to have Kriozere back in the lineup as he competed in the 300 Meter Intermediate Hurdles. He finished in 41.49 for 8th place. Motew was 10th in 41.96.
The Giants had two of their top distance runners running fresh in the 1600 Meter Run and were hoping for big performances from both of them. Senior Brett Davidson and junior Jonathan Rosenfeld got into their respective positions early as Davidson found himself in 2nd place leading the the next group of runners by several seconds. Rosenfeld was further back in that chase pack, but was still hitting good splits. On the final lap Davidson was going strong and looked like he had 2nd place locked up. Rosenfeld had moved up and was beginning to move past a group of runners into 5th place. When he hit 200 meters to go, he shifted gears and flew by two more runners and started closing on his teammate. Down the final stretch, Rosenfeld came up beside Davidson and the two pushed each other to the line with Davidson holding off Rosenfeld as they finished in 2nd and 3rd place. They both ran their fastest times with a 4:24.41 and 4:24.9. For Rosenfeld this was about a 14 second PR!
Freshmen Jose Reyes competed in the 3200 Meter Run. Despite struggling in the second mile, he was able to run a 10:07.88 for 10th place. His time is the new Highland Park High School freshmen 3200 Meter Run record.
Junior DJ Penick just missed making the finals in the Triple Jump as he had his best jump of the competition on his final attempt with a 39’8.25”. This earned him 10th place.
Junior Steven Weathers ran his fastest time in the 400 Meter Dash with a 54.93 to finish in 15th place.
The 4X400 Meter Relay had its best performance of the season. Weathers (55.7), senior Greg Schorsch (54.8), junior Gabe Newman (54.9), and Motew (53.0) ran 3:38.67. Still looking to get that time down more, but this was a great effort. Newman and Schorsch came to the meet as alternates and stepped in when we needed them.
This was another good step forward for the team as they head into the conference championship meet next week at GBN.
