Reyes and Davidson Race To Fast Times At Distance Night In Palatine
Tuesday, May 3 2016 - Distance Night In PalatinePalatine High School put together a top notch event for distance runners. Distance Night In Palatine was an incredible experience for all of the athletes involved. Highland Park was lucky enough to have two athletes qualify for the meet.
Jose Reyes raced in the Freshmen 1600 Meter Run. The leaders went out in the first 400 slower than Reyes was wanting so he had to take control of the race after the first lap. He was still over pace at the 800 so he continued to stretch his lead by pushing the third lap. Going into the final lap Reyes held the lead until just before the final turn when a runner from Hersey was able to pass him and hold on for the win. Reyes took 2nd place in 4:37.98. He just missed the Highland Park High School Freshmen Record. This was a gutsy race and showed how tough of a racer Jose is.
Senior Brett Davidson competed in the elite 3200 Meter Run. He got out in front early and then a few runners moved to the lead. As the lead changed during the race, Davidson fought to stay with whoever was leading. At lap 5, Davidson once again took the lead to push the pace. Shortly after he got the lead a runner from Springfield pushed to the front and tried to pull away. Once again it was Davidson that tried to go with him. By lap 7, he was a few seconds behind the leader and the pack was catching up to them. As they entered the final lap a pack of runners were together fighting for the lead. Davidson battled throughout the final lap and ended up in 6th place with a huge personal best of 9:16.83! This is the second fastest 3200 time in Highland Park High School history!
These were two special races run by two tremendous competitors! It will be exciting to see what they are able to accomplish the remainder of the season.
