Goldstein, Hatoum, and Wehner Race Fast at Distance Night in Palatine

Monday, May 22 2023 - Palatine Distance Night

Distance Night in Palatine is an elite distance running meet in which the best distance runners qualify to compete and run fast times. The atmosphere is always amazing with music playing and great fans. This year Highland Park had 3 qualifiers. Barak Goldstein in the 800 meter run, Brian Hatoum in the 2 mile run, and Nate Wehner in the 1 mile run.

First up for the Giants was Goldstein in the undercard 800. He got out extremely well and into great position. Coming off the turn in the final 300, Goldstein took the lead. He ended up getting passed down the final stretch, but ran a gutsy race and finished 3rd in his heat. He ran personal best 1:56.99 for 4th overall in the undercard 800s. His time is 6th all-time at Highland Park HS.

In section 3 of the main event 2 mile, Hatoum put himself with the front pack early in the race and showed tremendous confidence in his racing. He battled tough throughout the race. Three runners pulled away (including the 2 mile overall champion Dylan Myers from Lake Zurich). Hatoum ended up running a spectacular 9:27.32 for the full 2 mile race. His 3200 meter run time for the race was 9:24.14. This is a new Highland Park HS sophomore record.

Wehner raced in section 3 of the main event in the mile. He followed his race plan well throughout the first 3 laps of the race. During lap four, he was unable to hold the pace he wanted, but still fought hard to run a 4:25.96. He ended up 11th in his heat. His 1600 time of 4:24.15 is an outdoor personal best for the event.

This was another great showing by Highland Park at this meet! More to accomplish this season for these three talented and hard working distance runners.
