HP Ties for 2nd Place at Niles North Dan Horyn Invite

The Niles North Dan Horyn Invite included full varsity and frosh-soph line-ups. It also had JV events of relays and field events. This was the first outdoor non-relay invite of the season.

 

Field Event Highlights:

 

The HP throwers had a successful day at Niles North with 9 personal best marks! They were led by junior Larry Jenkins in the shot put. He won the varsity competition with a massive personal best throw of 48’5.5”. His previous best was 44’2.5”. Fellow junior Dmitry Derbedyenyev also had a personal best and finished in 7th place with a throw of 42’1.25”. In the JV shot put competition, senior newcomer Jacques Munkhjargal took 3rd place with a big personal best throw of 37’0.25”. His previous best was only 33’4”. Junior Alex Knight (another first year track & field team member) got 5th for JV with a throw of 36’5”. In discus, senior Caden Hellrung threw a personal best 120’5” (a 5+ foot personal best). He finished in 3rd place on varsity. Derbedyenyev threw 117’10” for 8th place. In frosh-soph discus, freshman Max Sukenik got over 100 for the first time, throwing 100’1”. His previous best was only 83’5”. Freshman Constatine Soutsos got his best mark with a 89’2” throw. Munkhjargal placed 6th for JV with a personal best 91’1”. Knight added another personal best throwing 82’2”.      

 

HP pole vaulters had 3 team members clear 10’. Based on misses, sophomore Gavin Flory took 4th on varsity while senior Enrique Lipezker was 7th. Senior Diego Alvarez finished in 2nd place on JV with his 10’ clearance. Freshman Fin Nunez also cleared 6’0.75” on frosh-soph.

 

Junior Russell Czerwinski cleared 5’8.75” to take 3rd place on varsity. Junior Nolan Schott took 6th at a personal best of 5’7”. Sophomore Mateo Diaz got over 4’7” competing on frosh-soph. 

 

All of the HP long jumpers got a personal best, equalled their personal best, or were close to their personal best. On varsity, junior Hugh Crawford equalled his best jumping 18’6” to take 8th place. Sophomore Eli Perkins jumped a personal best 18’4” for 9th on varsity. In the JV competition, sophomore Alejandro Jauregui jumped his personal best with a 15’2.75” mark. This was just over a foot further than his previous best. Freshman Matthew Nielsen was near his best jumping 12’7.75”. For the frosh-soph competition, sophomore Quentin Kelley was near his best with a 16’9.25” jump. Freshman Lucas Hoobler got a big personal best with a jump of 14’8.5”. 

 

The triple jump did not go as well for HP with only one personal best. Nielsen jumped 25’11.5” on JV for a personal best. Perkins was near his best to take 7th on varsity with a 36’8.25” jump. Freshman William Sheahen was also near his best on frosh-soph with a mark of 28’3”. 

 

Track Event Highlights:

 

The varsity 4X800 meter relay team took 3rd place in 8:44.05. The team consisted of sophomore Usiel Rodriguez (2:09.6), senior Alex Bradshaw (2:07.1 in his first race of the season), junior Yonatan Garfinkel (2:12.8 personal best), and junior Connor Edelstein (2:14.4 personal best). The frosh-soph 4X800 hd a solid run with two freshman running huge personal best splits. Carter Ramirez went from 2:36.4 to 2:27.9 and Truman Evans from 2:35.55 to 2:22.4!

 

The frosh-soph 4X100 meter relay ran a season best time of :49.68 (Tyler DePaolo, Hayden Tortora, Eric Rojas, and Daniel Huicochea). 

 

HP only had 2 guys running the 3200 meter run. On varsity, senior Angel Zeferino ran an inspiring race with a massive personal best. He finished in 10:06.34 to take 4th place. Freshman Lowell Redmond also ran a big personal best running 12:36.76. 

 

Both varsity hurdlers ran personal best times in the 110 meter high hurdles. Junior Oliver Baterdene ran 18.64 while Czerwinski crossed the line in 18.78. On frosh-soph, Diaz ran a personal best going sub 21 for the first time, He ran :20.87.

HP had some good performances in the 100 meter dash. Junior Asher Stern led the way for the Giants with a time of 12.19. Crawford was the next Giant finisher with a 12.32. Junior Eddy Picazo (12.77), sophomore Luke DePaolo (12.86 = to PR), and sophomore Eric Rojas (12.95) all ran sub 13 seconds. Senior Jacques Munkhjarjal just missed sub 13 with a personal best 13.10. Senior Alex Labedz ran a personal best 13.82 and freshmen Gabe Leon equaled his best time of 14.07. 

 

In the 100 meter dash, senior Paul Eam ran his best time with an 11.47 to take 7th place in varsity. Junior Asher Stern just missed his best time running 12.25. Both frosh-soph sprinters for HP ran personal best times. Freshman Daniel Huicochea ran 12.38 while sophomore Tyler DePaolo crossed the line in 12.71. 

 

In the 800 meter run, senior Noah Jackson had a huge final kick to win in a season best time of 2:02.76. Junior Zach Coren just missed his best time to take 9th in 2:06.14. On frosh-soph, Evans came back with another personal best after the 4X800 to run 2:21.77. Freshman Gal Raviv ran a strong 2:22.94. 

 

Junior Doug Anderson dominated the 400 meter dash with a winning time and new HP school record of :49.54. Bradshaw took 8th place in :54.77. Quentin Kelley was 8th on frosh-soph running :56.76 and sophomore Eric Rojas ran well to cross the line in 1:00.36. 

 

Junior Robert Oboza ran well in the 300 intermediate hurdles to take 8th on varsity in :44.13. Baterdene ran near his best time with a :46.86. Sophomore Lachlan Knapp took 2nd place on frosh-soph just missing breaking 44 as he ran a personal best :44.03. Diaz had another personal best with a :50.59. This was his first time under 51 seconds. 

 

Freshman Logan Liu ran a personal best 5:00.01 in the 1600 meter run on frosh-soph. He was so close to breaking 5 minutes and will look to do so the next time he runs the 1600. 

 

Anderson came back with a personal best in the 200 meter dash. He won the event in :22.27. Eam was 4th in :23.54. On frosh-soph, Huicochea finished in 6th place running a personal best :25.51. Rojas ran near his best time with a :27.05. 

 

This year, the meet included a throwers 4X100 meter relay. HP’s team included Soutsos, Derbedyenyev, sophomore Braxten Peterson, and Munkhjargal. The crew ran an impressive :53.31 and took 4th place overall from the slower heat. 

 

The JV 4X400 meter relay ran well with all 4 guys running personal best times. Alvarez led off in a :58.7. Jauregui ran 1:00.9. Sophomore Sean Bell ran 1:01.4 and junior Ethan Love ran :59.9. On frosh-soph, all 4 HP runners also ran personal best splits. Raviv led off with a :57.4. Nunez ran 1:01.7. Evans in his third event ran :58.9. Liu anchored the relay with a :59.7 to take 6th place overall. On varsity, Oboza led off with a personal best :53.7. Coren ran :54.6. Jackson ran :55.3 and handed off the baton to Anderson in 4th place. Anderson ran an incredible anchor leg to run down the other teams in a :48.2 split to win the event!

 

The team ended up tied for 2nd place on varsity and was just 13 points out of first place! This was a nice confidence builder for the team despite missing a few key athletes.

Varsity:

Larry Jenkins - Big SP PR of 48’5.5”.

 

Noah Jackson - 1st in the 800 meter run in 2:02.76 with a big kick and also ran on the winning 4X400.

 

Alex Bradshaw - 1st race of the season runs 2:07.1 4X800 split for 3rd place and takes 8th in 400 with a best time of :54.77.

 

Doug Anderson - 1st place in 3 events. School record in the 400 at :49.54, 200 time was 3rd all-time at HP of :22.27, then ran a :48.2 split for the comeback win in the 4X400. 

 

Frosh-Soph:

Truman Evans - 3 PRs, 4X800 PR 2:22.4, open 800 PR 2:21.77, 4X400 PR of :58.9.

 

Daniel Huicochea - 100 PR of 12.38, 200 PR of :25.51 for 6th place on FS, and anchored the 4X100.

 

JV:

Diego Alvarez - Ran on and led off the JV 4X100, 4X200, and 4X400. Also, got huge personal best in the PV to take 2nd on JV going from 8’6” best to clearing 10’0”. 

 

Jacques Munkhjargal - PR in SP taking 3rd on JV (:37’0.25”), PR in Discus taking 6th on JV (91’1”), anchored the 4th place throwers 4X100.
