First CSL Quad Is A Sweep For The Giants!
Friday, September 18 2015 - CSL Quad Meet vs NN, DF, and GBNIn the first of two CSL North Quad Meets, Highland Park was able to beat all three opponents on the varsity level. The scores were GBN 38-HP 23, DF 39-HP 21, and NN 32-HP 26. Despite running flat as a team, the Giants were able to put 8 runners in the top 17. Up front, senior Brett Davidson led a conservative race against senior Martin Barr of Niles North. Barr was able to make a move with just over 800 meters to go that Davidson was unable to match. Davidson took second place in 15:41.3. A big help for HP was the strong race by junior Jonathan Rosenfeld. His goal was to be ahead of Niles North’s number two runner and Deerfield’s number one runner. He was able to do that as he took 5th place at 16:15.0, less than 3 seconds behind GBNs number two runner and less than 7 seconds behind their number one runner. After Rosenfeld there were two NN runners and two DF runners, then 4 HP runners finished next. Junior Ben Bloom was 10th (16:33.2, less then 1 second behind DF’s number 2 runner and just over 3 seconds behind their number 1 runner). Junior Charlie Skurie took 11th (16:38.4) while freshmen Jose Reyes (16:42.7) and sophomore Nate Amster (16:43.1) finished with a burst in 12th and 13th. Sophomore Alec Glazier ran strong through the first 2 miles but struggled to have a strong finish. Look for him to bounce back in the next race. Junior Matthew Casey rounded out the top 8 for the team taking 17th in 17:05.2. After a great start to get the pack out with the leaders, they were not able to stay together tight throughout the race. That is something the pack will need to improve on by the time we get to the conference meet and state series.
In the frosh-soph race, Highland Park just ran freshmen. Richard Heller led the way as he took 5th place n 13:12.04 in the nearly 2.25 mile race. Next in for the Giants was Jack Schulman (14th, 14:10.1), who has been showing big improvement. He was followed by Chris Cizek (25th, 14:46.3) and Jack Casey (27th, 15:1.8). The fifth runner in for HP was Matthew Dennison (33rd, 15:55.2). The freshmen have really made huge strides in their training and racing. It will be exciting to see what the rest of the season holds for this hard working bunch.
