2015 State Track & Field Meet

Thursday, June 18 2015 - IHSA 3A Boys State Track & Field Championship

Senior Eddie Smoliak finished off his high school career with his 2nd All-State Medal.   After qualifying for the finals on Friday, the 3A vault got moved inside due to heavy rain and lightning.   Smoliak and the coaches were hoping for a better finish, but he did not have his best meet and cleared only 14' to take 8th place.   He finished his career at Highland Park with several all-time top 10 vaults including both the indoor (15'3") and outdoor (15'3") school records.  Eddie will be attending the University of Illinois next year where he will be vaulting on the track & field team.

Junior Brett Davidson showed great poise and toughness in his first State Meet as he competed in the 3200 Meter Run.   He was in heat one and from the gun went right with the leaders in hopes of running a fast time.   After just a few laps he realized that with the heat and very high humidity the pace was too slow for what he wanted so he took the lead.   He battled back and forth with another runner until the final lap.  Davidson had a strong finish, but ended up 3rd in his heat with a 9:28.96.   He ended up 19th overall (after being seeded 30th) which was less then 6 seconds away from being All-State.  The coaching staff was proud of the way Brett raced and is very excited to see what this hard working and very motivated distance runner will do in cross country and next track & field season!

Another highlight of the weekend happened at the Open Races at State under the lights.  Freshmen Damian Campos broke teammate Fitz Laurie's freshmen school record in the 1600 Meter Run.   Campos ran a 4:37.69 to set the new record!
