HP Produces Numerous Personal Bests In Final Open Meet At Deerfield

The last several years, Deerfield has offered an open meet for CSL schools to compete in. For most, this is a final chance to get a personal best and compete in one more meet with good competition. 

 

 Field Event Highlights:

 

The Giants did well in the throws. For the shot put, junior Larry Jenkins led the way. He won the event with a 45’0.5” throw. Senior Jacques Munkhjargal had a big day. He threw a personal best 41’9.25” to take second place! Mumkhjargal made such great improvements in only one season of high school track & field. Junior Alex Knight was another HP thrower that showed tremendous growth in just one season. He threw a personal best 37’5”. Look for him to make a big impact on the team next season. Junior Josh Pasternak competed in his only meet of the season and threw a solid 35’4.75”. He could be another thrower that could really help the team next year. Another junior with a personal best was Ezekiel Hightower. He threw 33’4” to get a personal best in his final meet of teh season. Freshman Ismael Vazquez had a personal best 32’7” throw. Sophomore Rodrigo Sanchez was another thrower with a personal best in the shot put. He threw over 30 feet for the first time with a toss of 30’4.25”. Junior Jon Bacci also got a personal best. He threw 20’6.5” to finish his season with a strong performance. 

 

The discus competition produced several more personal best performances for the HP throwers. Jenkins once again led the way for the team. He threw a personal best 121’4” to take 3rd place. Munkhjargal had another outstanding performance in this event. He took 6th place throwing a personal best 104’2”. Hightower just missed throwing over 100 feet for the first time. He threw a personal best 99’1”. Vazquez got another personal best with an 85’11” throw in the discus. Sophomore Braxten Peterson got a personal best throw with an 84’11. Pasternak got 78’10” in his first discus competition. Sophomore Alexandros Drosos had a nice performance in the discus with an personal best 71’5.75”. Sanchez threw another personal best with a toss of 69’10.5”. The throwers showed tremendous excitement for each other during both the shot put and discus competitions. Coach Carter has helped develop a strong positive culture with the HP throwers. It is going to be fun to see their growth next year and how much they will help the team be successful.

 

The HP pole vaulters that competed at this meet also did well. Senior Diego Alvarez cleared a monster personal best. He got over 11’0” to end his vaulting showing tremendous improvement from last year to this season. The top 3 vaulters at the meet all cleared 11 feet. Senior Finn Davis also got a big personal best. He cleared 9’0” for the first time and took 8th place. Freshman Fin Nunez got his personal best of 7’6”. Sophomore Henry Suh vaulted for the first time this season and cleared 7’0”. Freshmen Lucas Hoobler and Will Redmond were both near their personal best heights. They both cleared 6’6”. 

 

In the high jump junior Russell Czerwinski cleared 5’7”. Sophomore Alejandro Jaurequi cleared a solid 4’9”. This was his first bar clearance in a meet!

 

In the long jump, the team was led by sophomore Eli Perkins with a jump of 17’0.75”. Three freshmen got nice personal best marks at the meet. William Sheahen (12’11.5”), Spencer Pedraza (12’10”), and Will Redmond (12’6.75”). 

 

The triple jump event also produced a few personal best marks for HP. The team was led by junior Tyler Rosenthal. He got a personal best 37’8.5”. Sheahen got another personal best with a 29’3.75” mark. Freshman Matthew Nielsen got his best jump of the season with a 26’9.25” mark. 

 

Track Event Highlights:

 

In the 3200 meter run, senior Angel Zeferino ran a solid 10:23.94 to take 3rd place. Freshman Logan Liu ran his first 3200 of the season and ran an impressive 10:49.55 to take 5th place. 

 

Junior Oliver Baterdene ran a personal best 18.13 in the 110 meter high hurdles to take 3rd place. Sophomore Mateo Diaz ran a solid 20.31 and finished in 9th place.

 

More then half of the HP athletes in the 100 meter dash ran or equalled their personal best times. Juniors Tyler Rosethal and Ethan Seligman led the way for the team running their best times (12.42 and 12.76). Sophomore Eric Rojas ran a personal best 12.92. Two other HP sprinters ran under 13 seconds. Junior Owen Murphy ran his best time of 12.96 and Munkhjargal ran his first sub 13 with a 12.98. Senior Alex Labedz ran a personal best of 13.11 to just miss running sub 13. Jauregui ran a personal best 13.4. Freshmen Spencer Pedraza ran his best time of 14.08. Junior Ari Dobos ran a persoanl best 17.49. Several throwers ran the 100 meter dash for the first time to test their speed (Noah Kogan 13.98, Braxten Peterson 14.29,  and Rodrigo Sanchez 15.01).  

In the 800 meter run, junior Connor Edelstein led the way for the Giants. He ran a personal best 2:14.17. Sophomore Quentin Kelley usually jumps and/or runs sprint races. At this meet he tried the 800 and ran a solid 2:16.81. Freshman Harvey Hayes ran a personal best 2:32.54. Sophomore Luke Byrnes also ran his first 800 and crossed the line in 2:33.58.

 

Juniors Ben Kerch and Yonatan Garfinkel led the way for HP in the 400 meter dash. Kerch ran a personal best :58.00 and Garfinkel ran :58.08. The Giants had two other runners sub 60. Freshmen Truman Evans ran :59.08 while sophomore Charlie Ludington clocked a :59.35. Sophomore Sean Bell ran a big personal best of 1:00.83. Rojas ran a solid 1:01.86. Labedz ran his first 400 of the season in 1:05.23.

 

In the 300 meter intermediate hurdles, sophomore Lachlan Knapp won the event in :44.40. Juniors Russell Czerwinski (:45.77) and Oliver Baterdene (:46.06) finished 3rd and 4th. Junior Andrew Kern ran a personal best :47.62 while sophomore Mateo Diaz ran :50.01.

 

The 200 meter dash had a plethora of personal best performances by the Giants. Diego Alvarez added another great perfomance to lead the way for HP with a personal best :25.20. Lachlan Knapp and junior Zach Liss ran the outdoor 200 for the first time this season. Knapp ran :25.29 and Liss :25.31. Finn Davis ran a personal best :25.54 while junior Tyler Rosenthal ran his best time of :25.57. Charlie Ludington ran the 200 for the first time and clocked a :25.75. Owen Murphy and Eric Rojas each got another personal best performance at this meet running :26.06 and :26.58. Connor Edelstein also ran a :26.58. Alejandro Jauregui competed in his 4th event and ran a personal best :26.60. Sean Bell also got another personal best after the 400 by running a :27.30. Mateo Diaz ran his first outdoor 200 of the season and got :27.35. Freshmen Ethan Glovsky and Spencer Pedraza each ran personal best times. Glovsky ran :28.58 while Pedraza crossed the line in :28.93. 

 

HP had 3 4X400 meter relay teams competing at this meet. The fastest splits were run by senior Alex Bradshaw (:53.6), Quentin Kelley (:56.2), Connor Edelstein (:57.8), Ben Kerch (:57.8), Truman Evans (:57.8), Russel Czerwinski (:57.9), and Yonatan Garfinkel (:58.1). 

 

This was a great meet for the Giants. Many of the competitors competed in their last competition of the season. A majority of those athletes ended their season with one or more personal bests. This was a tremendous way to show the hard work paying off.

 

The nominations for Giant of the Meet included:

 

Diego Alvarez - PR in PV going from 10’ to 11’, PR in 200 of :25.20.

 

Ramey Heimgartner - 1600 PR of 5:40.23 to win his heat with great finish. 

 

Connor Edelstein - 800 PR of 2:14.17, near PR in 200, and PR 4X400 split of :57.8.

 

Jacques Munkhjargal - 2nd in SP with PR going from 37’.25” to 41’9.25”, Discus PR going from 91’1” to 104’2”, and 100 PR of 12.98.

 

Alejandro Jauregui - 4 events, PR in HJ of 4’9”, PR in 100 (13.40), PR in 200 (:26.60), and LJ of 14’4”.

 

Alex Labedz - PR in 100 to win his heat with a time of 13.11 and ran the 400 forthe first time in 1:05.23.
