HP Competes at CSL Freshmen Invite

Tuesday, March 21 2023 - CSL Frosh Indoor Invite


For the 2nd year in a row, the CSL held a 12 team freshmen conference invite. This is an extremely competitive meet that allows the freshmen from the conference to see how they stack up against each other. For Highland Park, this was an opportunity to assess the team’s strengths and see where they are lacking in fire power.

 

Field Event Highlights:

Shot Put

Max Sukenik continued his impressive frosh season with a 4th place finish. He threw 32’9.75”. Ismael Vazquez got 10th with a toss of 28’10.25”. They were the top 2 throwers from the north division. 

Long Jump

Lucas Hoobler continues to improve in the long jump. He got a personal best by just over 1 foot. He jumped 13’9.75”. William Sheahen jumped 12’3”.

Triple Jump

Sheahen came back with a 24’7.75” mark in the triple jump. Will Redmond got 22’9” in the event.

High Jump

Francisco Nunez got a 2” personal best in the high jump to go 4’2”. 

 

Track Event Highlights:

4X800 Meter Relay

The 4X800 relay team of Gal Raviv (2:27.4), Harvey Hayes (2:35.0), Truman Evans (2:41.3), and Carter Ramirez (2:37.0) ran well. They finished in 10:14.85 to take 4th place. Raviv and Evans ran personal best times for their 800 splits.

3200 Meter Run

Josh Brown had a big breakthrough race in the 3200 meter run. He broke 11 minutes by running 10:58.0 to take 2nd place. Henry Gamson also ran a personal best finishing in 11:07.90. Gamson finished in 4th place.

50 Meter Dash

Nunez ran 7.27 in the 50 meter dash while Hayden Tortora ran a personal best 7.31.

800 Meter Run

Evans and Ramirez came back in the 800 meter run. Evans battled tough to run 2:41.15 and tie his old personal best before running the 4X800. Ramirez ran a 2:52.44.

4X160 Meter Relay

Tortora, Spencer Pedraza, Ethan Glovsky, and Hoobler raced in the 4X160 meter relay for the first time this season. They had clean hand-offs and ran a 1:33.82.

400 Meter Dash

Nunez ran 1:02.39 in the 400 meter dash to take 5th place. Raviv ran 1:03.57 and was 9th.

55 Meter Low Hurdles

Tortora and Matthew Nielsen tried the low hurdles for the first time this season and both got through the race well. Tortora ran 11.21 and Nielsen crossed the line in 12.54. 

1600 Meter Run

Logan Liu ran a 5:17.38 for 4th place in the 1600 meter run. Lowell Redmond ran 5:36.24. Both runners know they need to be more aggressive in their racing tactics to get big drops in their times. 

200 Meter Dash

Daniel Huicochea raced well in the 200 meter dash with a :27.96. Tortora competed in his fourth event of the night and ran :29.00.

4X400 Meter Relay

Nunez led off the 4X400 meter relay team with a 1:03.9. Hayes ran 1:09.3 for the second leg. Liu split a 1:03.9 and Brown had a strong anchor leg of 1:01.9 for a personal best split. The team ran 4:19.49 and ended up taking 5th place. 

 

This freshmen team competed hard and gave it their best. Several guys were trying new events for the first time. The Giants know that they need to improve in many areas and get some athletes to try events like the pole vault and hurdles. The coaches are confident this group of freshmen will get much better by the outdoor conference meets. 

The nominations for Giant of the Meet included:

Hayden Tortora - 4 events, PR in 50m, strong lead-off in 4X160, aksed to try hurdles and ran 11.21, and ran :29.00 in the 200.

Lucas Hoobler - Over 1 foot PR in LJ at 13’9.75, ran in the 4X160 for the first time

Francisco Nunez - 4 events, HJ PR, 50m in 7.27, 5th in 400 at 1:02.39, lead-off of 5th place 4X400.

Josh Brown - Huge PR in the 3200 at 10:58.0 and big PR in the 4X400 running a 1:01.9 on the anchor to help the team get 5th.
