Rough Spring Weather Causes 2 Of The First 4 Meets To Be Cancelled
Sunday, April 29 2018 - Highland Park vs. Evanston, Loyola, and WaukeganThis spring has been off to a rough start in terms of getting some quality weather to compete in. Two of the first 4 meets were cancelled. The only two meets the Giants have had so far have been non-scored quad meets.
Highlights from home meet vs. Evanston, Loyola, and New Trier:
The 100 Meter Dash finishers for HP were led by senior Michael Menaker (11.4), freshmen Zion Griffin (11.8), junior Jonny Rossen (12.1), senior Andrew Derdena (12.2), and sophomore Kolton Jacobs (12.2).
In the 110 Meter High Hurdles, the team had 4 hurdlers under 20 seconds: junior Joseph Beaudet (17.3), freshmen Evan Diethrich (18.9), and sophomores Max Kaplan (19.2) and Eduardo Monk (19.4).
Junior Jordy Mazza led the way in the 800 Meter Run with a 2:11.5.
In the 400 Meter Dash, three seniors led the way with personal bests. Menaker ran 56.1 while Derdena finished in 57.1 and Arda Sonmez sprinted to a 58.5.
Three runners finished under 50 seconds in the 300 Meter Intermediate Hurdles: Beaudet (45.6), Diethrich (47.1), and Monk (47.7).
Junior Jose Reyes finished the 1600 Meter Run in 4:41.9. Freshmen Tyler Carlson raced to a big personal best with a 5:07.6.
Senior Ben Kirsch had the furthest Long Jump with a 17’4.5”.
Freshmen Riley Shallenbarger and Jacobs both cleared 4’8” in the High Jump.
Senior Ben Zavell led the way in the Pole Vault clearing 11’0”.
Senior Zach Auerbach had the best throw in the Discus with a 130’1” while junior Will Pfeffer had his best throw getting a 114’4” mark. Sophomore Charlie Kleiman had a personal best 96’10” and freshmen Chris Lee also had a big throw of 94’2”. Kleiman also led the way in the Shot Put as he through an all-time best 39’4”.
The top 4X400 Meter Relay team ran a 3:46.3. The team consisted of Reyes (58.2), Zavell (57.3), junior Jack Casey (55.9), and Mazza (54.9).
Highlights from the Quad meet at New Trier:
The 100 Meter Dash competitors were once again led by Michael Menaker with an 11.4. He was followed closely by the freshmen duo of Giovanni Volpentesta (11.5) and Zion Griffin (11.8).
Sophomore Max Kaplan ran under 19 seconds for the first time in the 110 Meter High Hurdles with an 18.6 to lead the way for HP.
Senior Nate Amster was all by himself with a big lead in the 800 Meter Run as he raced to a 2:06.7 personal best.
Sophomore Emre Gulpinar has been having a strong season and that continued as he broke 60 for the first time in the 400 Meter Dash with a 59.8.
Sophomore Eduardo Monk led the way for the Giants in the 300 Meter Intermediate Hurdles as he ran a 48.4.
The highlight of the 4X400s was the 56.7 split run by Amster.
The team did not have many athletes competing in the field events. Despite a sore ankle, freshmen Riley Shallenbarger jumped 17’8” in the Long Jump.
