Reyes Leads Team To CSL North Quad Meet Sweep
Saturday, September 17 2016 - Highland Park vs Vernon Hills, Maine East, and Maine WestHP competed in their first of two CSL Quad Meets this season. They took on Maine East, Maine West and new CSL North school Vernon Hills. The meet was hosted by Highland Park on the challenging Sunset Woods Park course. The varsity team looked to pack it up and push the pace to break their competition. It was a wonderful site to see the GIANTS pack leading through the mile with seven guys. Eventually, sophomore Jose Reyes broke away from the pack and raced to an outstanding victory by almost 20 seconds in 15:44.9. His race made the All-Time List on the course with the 22nd fastest time. The team ended up taking 1st-5th place and took 9 of the top 11 spots in the race. Junior Nate Amster showed he has fully recovered from his injury with a great race taking 2nd in 16:03.2. Senior Charlie Skurie bounced back from a sub-par race in Peoria to take 3rd in 16:07.6. Next in were seniors Matthew Casey (16:14.8) and Jonathan Rosenfeld (16:20.0). A runner from Vernon Hills took 6th and was followed by senior Juan Estela (16:43.8), junior Fitz Laurie (16:53.5), and senior Ben Bloom (16:57.3). After a runner from Maine West, senior Hayden Schott finished in 11th with a time of 17:01.6. Sophomore Jordy Mazza continued to run well this season with another personal best taking 16th in 17:27.3. Several other HP runners ran or equalled their season best times on this tough course...senior Matthew Drummond, junior Alex Frank, senior Ian Goldberg, sophomore Aidan Rosenbloom, and sophomore Jack Schulman.
The great team run by the varsity gave Highland Park the sweep in the Quad Meet, making it 10 straight sweeps for HP (starting back in 2011). That is the equivalent of 30 CSL North Dual Meet wins in a row!
Highland Park only had freshmen racing in the frosh-soph race. The team got out really well in the first 400. They took a risk and battled throughout the race. Each of the freshmen went through the mile faster than their first timed mile of the season! The team was led by Jake Margolick with a gutsy race and strong finish to take 4th place in 12:18.2 for the 2.05 mile race. He was followed by Nolan Espinoza 13:53.7, John-Henry Ohlwein 14:08.1, Ryan Rosenfeld 14:17.8, Frankie Pecaro 14:28.5, Zach Voltz 14:48.2, Elan Schwartz 15:19.4, and Cole Isaacson 15:30.0. If they make the commitment to put in the work over the next few years, this freshmen group can become great!
