Krauss places 120th at NCAA Division III Cross Country Meet

Saturday, November 21 2009 - Dan Krauss

Grinnell College's Dan Krauss '12 (HP Class of 2008) wrapped up a stellar 2009 cross country campaign by finishing 120th at the NCAA Division III National Championship Saturday in Cleveland, Ohio.

Krauss ran the 8 kilometer race, which included 276 runners, in 26 minutes, 51.4 seconds. The men's individual champ was Ricky Flynn of Lynchburg, who finished in 25:09.8. North Central won the men's team title.

Krauss qualified for the NCAA Championships after placing 13th at last week's regional meet at Oakland Acres Golf Course. Highlights from his season included a Midwest Conference individual title while leading the Pioneers to the team crown, and running the third-best time in program history when he recorded a clocking of 24:43.5 at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Brooks Invitational.

Hey guys! Anyway, the meet took place about an hour from my school and I ended up going to the meet with a bunch of guys who road tripped for the meet. Course was kind of soft, hilly and kind of slow, but the atmosphere was awesome. Paige ran for NYU and they got 24th place I think. The african guy from Hamilton who was favored led until 1200 meters to go, then died. He basically walked it in. North Central from Naperville domisteeplewebd and won easily in the men's race.

The results showed that Paige was 183rd. Great job by both Dan and Paige...and they are both only sophomores!

North Central is one of the best teams ever. The went out in a pack of 7 and chilled until mile 2 or 3 when they break apart and their number 1 went and chased down the top group. They had 7 all Americans on their team of 7!!! K Train is a stud as well as Paige. Really a cool experience to see a college race. As Broutman said, the atmosphere was insane. Case College had about 50 men with nothing but short shorts, body paint, spears and shields running around the whole course shouting and throwing spears. Grinell actually had the biggest flag in the whole meet just for Krauss. Think of the running from spot to spot in Peoria than multiply it by 5 and you have how many people are sprinting across the field to watch as much race as they can. Anyway, great job to both Krauss and Paige for making it to nationals. Its an extremely rare honor just to compete with the best of the best.
