Varsity Struggles At Wheeling Invite
Tuesday, October 14 2014 - Wheeling InviteThe Wheeling Invite was supposed to be a good test for Highland Park against several strong teams from the Schaumburg Sectional. The Giants had a rough day as a team and were not able to meet that challenge. The varsity finished a disappointing 8th place in the meet. Despite not having his best race, senior Ben Casey was still able to finish in 5th place against some all-state caliber runners. The rest of the team was just too far back with a 1:14 gap for 1-5 and a 1:22 for 1-7. That is just too high if the team wants to have a chance to make state.
The open race had some more positives from their performance. Led by junior Joe Pinsky, they had a 1-5 gap of only 17 seconds and a 1-7 gap of just 24 seconds! 6 of those top 7 in the open race return next year. That could make next year's team very strong if they are willing to make the commitment and work hard over the next year.
Now the team needs to regroup and step up so that they can compete like they are capable of and win another conference championship!
