HP Varsity Sweeps Second Quad

Thursday, October 3 2013 - CSL Quad Vs. ME, GBN, and NN

The race plan for the varsity going into the CSL Quad Meet at Maine East was to get out fast and keep the lead pack close together through the mile.   The Giants top three were able to do that, but once again the 4-8 runners were much too far back already at the mile.  Senior Angel Estrada was able to pull away after the mile for the easy 5K win (16:02) while junior Ben Casey took 2nd (16:31).   Sophomore Brett Davidson was able to go out hard through the mile but was not able to stay with the number one runner from Niles North and finished in 4th place (17:03).  The HP top five was rounded out with senior Jeremy Bloom finishing in 8th place (17:36) just six seconds behind GBN's number one runner and senior Griffin Bojan in 11th (17:47),several seconds ahead of the number four runners for both GBN and NN.   Highland Park beat all three teams by sizeable margins (NN, GBN, and Maine East).

The team knows they must continue to push the training and take care of the details.   They also need to better execute their race plans in the upcoming meets.   These next few weeks are crucial to the end of season success of the team!

The frosh-soph race consisted of another strong race by freshmen Jonathan Rosenfeld.   He ran nearly the entire race stride for stride with the top runner from NN.   As they entered the track with 300 meters to go they both were pushing the pace and then when they hit the final 200, Rosenfeld put it into another gear and pulled away for a 10 second win in the 2.05 mile race (11:50).  Freshmen Matthew Drummond had a great race finishing in 3rd place (12:05) holding off GBN's number one runner by three seconds.  The next 3 finishers for the Giants were freshmen David Heller (12:44), Juan Estela (12:45), and Matthew Casey (12:56).   This pack of three knows they must work hard to close the gap on their front-running teammates. HP beat NN and ME, but they lost by just 4 points to GBN.
