Rosenfeld And Reyes Lead Giants To Another CSL Quad Sweep

Saturday, September 24 2016 - CSL Quad vs. GBN, DF, and ME

In their second CSL Quad Meet of the season, Highland Park wanted to dominate the competition once again on the varsity level.  The pack got out well at the start, but got bunched up as a group of Deerfield runners got up towards the front and people were jostling for position. It did not take long for the GIANTS to pull away from all but two of the DF runners as sophomore Jose Reyes took the lead and pushed the pace to spread things out.  Eventually, HP had the top five spots with a DF runner chasing.  That runner had a strong last mile to take 4th overall.  Reyes led nearly the entire race until senior Jonathan Rosenfeld closed the gap and had his usual strong finish to take first in 15:47 with Reyes at 15:48 in 2nd. Junior Nate Amster had a solid race as he took 3rd in 16:01 to stay in front of DF’s number one runner.  The GIANTS took the next three spots with juniors Fitz Laurie (16:15) and Alec Glazier (16:17) taking 5th and 6th while senior Matthew Casey was 7th in 16:23. Seniors Juan Estela (16:42) and Ben Bloom (16:43) finished in 11th and 12th.  That is 8 runners in the top 12 for HP.  This makes it another sweep this season and the 11th in a row.   Winning 11 quad meets is the equivalent to winning 33 dual meets! Some other notable performances in the varsity race: sophomore Jordy Mazza took 25th in 17:29, senior Matthew Drummond ran a season best 17:43, sophomore David Halfin also ran a season best with a 19:21, and sophomore Eric Rhum took a fall early in the race, but got up and continued to race tough to run a season best 22:25.

Highland Park’s freshmen raced well in the frosh-soph race.  Jake Margolick showed that he has what it takes to be a great runner.  He raced with poise and toughness. After finding himself in 3rd place for much of the race, Margolick worked his way into second place.  In the final 400 he closed the gap on the leader to 3 seconds (after being behind 7 seconds at the mile) to take second place in 11:43 for two miles.  The rest of the freshmen ran well, but must continue to close the gap on Margolick.  Ryan Rosenfeld had a great race to be the second HP finisher in the race running 13:19.  He was followed closely by Nolan Espinoza (13:22) and John-Henry Ohlwein (13:23).  Frankie Pecaro also ran well with a 13:43. Cole Isaacson really got after it this race and got out very well and finished sub 14 with a 13:59!  Elan Shwartz had a solid race with a 14:16.   This group of freshmen have a lot of potential if each of them are willing to make the commitment over the next several years to be the best distance runners they can be.
