Lake County Invite

Sunday, September 4 2016 - Lake County Cross Country Invite

At the Lake County Invite, junior Alec Glazier got out well in the first mile.   Seniors Jonathan Rosenfeld and Charlie Skurie were not too far behind and Ben Bloom another few seconds behind them.  The next group was led by seniors Juan Estela and Hayden Schott with junior Sebastian Arias and senior Josh Drummond being the next two Giants going through the mile. As the race progressed, Rosenfeld and Skurie worked their way up to Glazier and the three finished close together in 14th (Rosenfeld 15:51.8), 17th (Skurie 15:57.2), and 18th (Glazier 15:58.5). The scoring was rounded out with Bloom in 32nd (16:35.5) and Estela in 44th (16:52.0).   Schott was 57th in 17:03.3 while Arias finished with a big personal best of 17:40.5.  Drummond was 96th in 18:04.4.

Highland Park took 4th place overall.  It was a solid effort with guys given a chance to step up into new roles with several runners not racing at this meet. Much work still needs to be done and the pack needs to close the gap.  Hard work, focus, and a belief in themselves and each other will be what takes this team to the next level.

The Open Race had many strong performances with several of the guys running in their first high school cross country race.   The team was led by sophomore Jordy Mazza as he showed tough racing tactics taking 13th in 18:13.6. He was followed closely by senior Matthew Drummond in 14th (18:17.1).  Senior Ethan Small took 22nd in 18:38.5. The scoring was wrapped up with freshmen Jake Margolick running well to finish in 29th (18:58.0) and sophomore David Halfin in 51st (19:57.4).  The rest of the finishers for HP in the Open Race were all freshmen or sophomores.  Ryan Smith 20:15.3, Andrew Biondi 21:02.1, Noah Canel 21:37.9, Frankie Pecaro 21:39.0, Kevin Cunniff 22:06.0, and Jack Gonzalez 23:39.9.

As the training progresses and each guy on the team makes the commitment to not only be the best runner they can be but also the best teammate they can be, great things are to come this season.
