WU Men and Women Finish First at Maryville Classic XC Meet

St. Louis, Mo., September 12, 2009The Washington University in St. Louis men’s and women’s cross country teams swept the top spots of the Maryville Classic on Saturday, Sept. 12, at the Parkway South High School cross country course in St. Louis, Mo. It is the second meet victory of the year for the WU women, who won the Big River Running Early Bird meet last Saturday in Forest Park.

At the Maryville Classic, the Washington U. women turned in a perfect first-place score of 15 points, taking the top six individual spots in the six-team race 5k race. The Bears had eight student-athletes finish in the top-10 and all of their runners finished in the top-30.

Junior Sangeeta Hardy finished first overall with a time of 20:32. A pair of freshmen runners completed the top-three, as Anne Correll came in second with a mark of 20:51 and Brittany Cronin took third place by submitting a time of 20:56. Junior Anna Shafer-Skelton came in fourth place (21:12) and sophomore Elisabeth Stocking rounded out the Washington University scorers with a fifth-place finish and a time of 21:19.

In the men’s race, a trio of freshmen provided a spark for Washington U. as the Bears saw three first-year runners finish in the top-seven. Jason Dorn paced the Bears with a third-place finish and a time of 21:16. Coming in just four seconds behind Dorn in fifth place was Mikael Boughdiri, and Josh Lewis finished seventh in 21:25.

Also scoring for the Bears was senior Tim Meahl, who ran to a 12th-place finish with a time of 21:38, and sophomore Peter Bush, who’s time of 21:45 was good for 13th overall.

The Washington U. men’s and women’s cross country teams will take next week off before returning to action on Saturday, Sept. 26, for the Southern Illinois University Saluki Invitational to be held in Carbondale, Ill., starting at 10 a.m.
