Estrada Wins Title; Team Takes Second At Lake County

Wednesday, September 4 2013 - Lake County Cross Country Invite

The Giants took a nice step in the right direction at the Lake County Invite.   The team was second, with 86 points, behind a very talented Barrington team that scored 49 points.

Senior Angel Estrada had a very strong race, pulling away in the final half mile to win by about 12 seconds.  He ran the 5K course in 15:41.8.   Junior Ben Casey was HP's second runner as he battled with Barrington's number one runner and outkicked him to finish in 3rd place with a time of 15:59.7.  The team's next three runner's are still working to close the gap on our number two runner.  Senior Jeremy Bloom finished 23rd (17:00.7), senior Griffin Bojan was 28th (17:13.3), while junior Andrew Huddleston finished 31st (17:19.0) to round out the top five for the Giants.

In the open race (5K), the Highland Park team finished first, scoring only 26 points to Lakes Community which scored 78 points.  The team was led by a 2-3 finish by freshmen Jonathan Rosenfeld (18:50.7) and Josh Drummond (18:51.4).   The top five for the Giants were rounded out by freshmen Matthew Drummond (6th, 19:29.1), junior Jake Dougherty (7th, 19:32.9), and freshmen Ian Goldberg (10th, 20:01.1).

Many runners had big improvements from the first meet to this one.   All of the team members that ran on this course for the CSL Championship Meet last October are well ahead of the times run then.  The continued hard work and focus keeps the team moving in the right direction to reach our goals.  Now everyone must continue to take care of the details and step up their training!
